Power, un des plus vieux magazines américains consacrés au secteur de la production d’électricité, a attribué son Power Award 2016 de la meilleure centrale au réacteur russe BN-800. Ce réacteur rapide refroidi au sodium, produit actuellement de l’électricité à la centrale nucléaire de Beloyarsk. Zoom sur ce que les journalistes du magazine Power considèrent comme « le réacteur du futur ».

Une technologie distinguée pour ses perspectives

Considéré comme une des sources d’information les plus importantes au monde pour tout ce qui touche à l’industrie de la production d’électricité, le magazine américain Power décerne chaque année son Power Award de la meilleure centrale du monde. Cette distinction vise à récompenser et mettre en avant médiatiquement la mise en service d’une centrale ou d’un réacteur innovant et considéré par les journalistes de Power comme vecteur de développement pour l’ensemble du secteur de la production d’électricité.

C’est le réacteur à neutrons rapides BN-800, actuellement en fonctionnement au sein de la centrale nucléaire russe de Beloïarsk, qui a obtenu cette distinction. Le jury en charge de l’attribution de ce prix a estimé que cette unité de production à cycle fermé ouvre de nouvelles perspectives d’évolution dans le domaine du nucléaire civil : favoriser la production électronucléaire tout en réduisant considérablement les stocks de combustible nucléaire usé (en raison de ses besoins quasi inexistant en uranium enrichi).

Le réacteur BN-800 est un réacteur nucléaire rapide refroidi au sodium qui a été couplé au réseau électrique national russe le 10 décembre 2015. Il s’agit de la quatrième unité de production de la centrale nucléaire de Beloïarsk, située dans la ville de Zaretchny (sud-ouest de la Russie). D’une puissance de 800 MW, le BN-800 est considéré comme le prototype d’un réacteur plus puissant, le BN-1200.

Une quatrième génération de réacteur issue de la coopération internationale

Le réacteur rapide refroidi au sodium (ou réacteur à neutrons rapides à caloporteur sodium) est issu de la volonté du Forum international Génération IV visant à faire émerger plus rapidement des technologies plus performantes et plus faciles à maitriser. Douze pays (France, États-Unis, Japon, Russie, Royaume-Uni, Suisse, Canada, Chine, Corée du Sud, Afrique du Sud, Argentine, Brésil) et la Communauté Européenne de l’Énergie Atomique décident à ce titre de s’allier en 2000 afin de développer une nouvelle génération de systèmes nucléaires.

Plusieurs États se lance donc dans le développement d’une quatrième génération de réacteur nucléaire affichant des avancées importantes en termes de développement énergétique durable, de fiabilité de la production et de sûreté. Trois de ces six systèmes sont des réacteurs à neutrons rapides.

Cette technologie fonctionne comme un réacteur traditionnel : la fission des atomes du combustible génère de la chaleur qui est ensuite utilisée par le turbogénérateur pour produire de l’électricité. La différence majeure se situe au niveau du combustible utilisé, un mélange d’uranium 230 et de plutonium 239. Grâce au système à neutrons rapides, le bouclage complet du cycle nucléaire s’effectue avec un multi-recyclage du plutonium, permettant ainsi de préserver les ressources en uranium. Les scientifiques estiment que cette technologie pourrait permettre de produire 50 à 100 fois plus d’électricité avec la même quantité de minerai que les réacteurs classiques.
