Pour le Centre Européen d’Excellence en Biomimétisme, « le biomimétisme consiste in fine à faire de la recherche autrement, en s’inspirant du vivant pour tirer parti des solutions et inventions produites par la nature ». C’est justement sur ce principe que se fondent les travaux de l’industrie nucléaire pour développer la fusion thermonucléaire. Celle-ci vise en effet à reproduire le fonctionnement des étoiles et du Soleil sur Terre. Etat des lieux et explications.

Les conditions de réalisation de la fusion thermonucléaire

Pour le Commissariat à l’énergie atomique et aux énergies alternatives (CEA), la fusion nucléaire consiste à exploiter « l’énergie de liaison nucléaire » reliant les protons et les neutrons pour former le noyau des atomes. Afin d’exploiter cette énergie, deux méthodes sont aujourd’hui connues : casser des noyaux lourds (fission nucléaire) ou fusionner des noyaux légers (fusion nucléaire).

Après des années de recherche, les scientifiques ont opté pour l’utilisation du deutérium et du tritium, deux isotopes de l’hydrogène, afin d’optimiser le processus de libération d’énergie par fusion. Pour réussir ce procédé, il faut porter la matière à très haute température (environ 150 millions de degrés Celsius), qui se présentera alors sous la forme d’un plasma (ni solide, ni liquide, ni gazeuse).

Ainsi que l’explique Jérôme Paméla, Directeur de l’Agence ITER France : « la quantité de lithium et de deutérium contenue dans une batterie d’ordinateur portable et quarante litres d’eau satisferait la consommation d’électricité d’un Européen pendant trente ans. Il faudrait une quarantaine de tonnes de charbon pour produire autant d’électricité ».

Le fonctionnement d’un réacteur expérimental : le tokamak et le confinement magnétique

Le tokamak est un réacteur expérimental qui permet de maintenir le plasma de fusion à très haute température pendant plusieurs minutes. Ce « confinement du plasma est obtenu par la superposition de deux champs magnétiques qui agissent comme des rails invisibles guidant les particules ». Il est associé à des « composants activement refroidis » et à un circuit d’eau à haute pression. Enfin, un « limiteur plancher circulaire » permet également d’évacuer une partie de la puissance cédée par le plasma.

La fusion réalisée au sein du plasma « donne naissance à un noyau d’hélium 4 doué d’une énergie de 3,52 MeV et à un neutron de 14,06 MeV ». Afin d’isoler les parois de ce plasma, dont les particules sont électriquement chargées, on utilise donc une « chambre toroïdale avec bobines magnétiques ». A l’horizon 2030, le confinement magnétique devrait pouvoir se faire sur des temps longs ; par ailleurs, la question de l’étanchéité de l’enceinte est également primordiale.

Si à l’heure actuelle plusieurs tokamaks sont en exploitation ou en construction, des progrès doivent encore être réalisés, notamment afin qu’ils respectent le critère de Lawson*, autrement dit, pour démontrer la viabilité de telles installations. Un préalable en passe d’être obtenu depuis que les résultats apportés par le tokamak Jet (UK) ou par le Tore Supra (France), ont amélioré les connaissances sur la physique des plasmas. Le projet international ITER, initié en 1985 par M. Gorbatchev, R. Reagan et F. Mitterrand, nous autorise d’ailleurs à envisager une production industrielle avant la fin du siècle.

Quelle alternative à la fusion thermonucléaire par confinement magnétique ?

Aux Etats-Unis, les chercheurs du MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) planchent également sur le réacteur ARC (affordable, robust, compact). Celui-ci devrait être opérationnel avant le réacteur ITER tout en ayant un coût de fabrication largement inférieur (5 milliards d’euros, contre 16 milliards), mais appartient encore à la grande famille des tokamaks.

Dans le champ de la recherche sur la fusion thermonucléaire, on peut évoquer une alternative au réacteur tokamak élaborée par l’institut Max Planck, en Allemagne : le Wendelstein 7-X. Inspiré par les travaux américains sur les stellarators, la construction d’un premier prototype vient de s’achever en 2015. Son objectif est de pouvoir contrôler le plasma pendant plus de 30 minutes (contre 6 minutes pour le record du Tore Supra en 2003). Toutefois, le W7-X fonctionne toujours sur le principe du confinement magnétique.

En revanche, il existe actuellement une technique concurrente pour la production civile d’énergie de fusion : « la fusion par confinement inertiel ». Imaginée par le physicien américain John Nuckolls en 1972, elle est développée en Europe dans le cadre du projet HiPER, initié par la Commission européenne lors de la présidence française en 2008. Aux Etats-Unis, un projet similaire (LIFE : Laser Inertial Fusion-Fission Energy) a été initié en septembre 2008, devant l’American Nuclear Society.

*Critère de Lawson : assurer que l’énergie de fusion dégagée (modulo un rendement d’extraction de 30%) soit supérieure à l’énergie qu’il faut fournir au plasma pour l’amener dans les conditions de combustion.
