De passage en France, le directeur général de l’Agence Internationale de l’Energie Atomique (AIEA), Yukiya Amano, s’est rendu au centre de recherche nucléaire de Cadarache, où il a visité plusieurs installations développées par des programmes de recherche internationaux.

Arrivé le 6 septembre sur le site du Commissariat à l’Energie Atomique (CEA) après avoir rencontré le ministre des Affaires étrangères à Paris, M. Yukiya Amano a été accueilli par le directeur du CEA de Cadarache (Bouches-du-Rhône), M. Christian Bonnet, et le directeur nucléaire du CEA, M. François Gauché. Le délégué général de l’AIEA était également accompagné de l’ambassadeur de France auprès de l’Office des Nations unies et des Organisations internationales, S.E. Jean-Louis Falconi, et de la directrice des relations internationales du CEA, Mme Anne Lazar-Sury.

Au cours de ce déplacement, il a pu découvrir le laboratoire d’examens des combustibles actifs (Leca), mais aussi le futur réacteur de recherche internationale Jules Horowitz (RJH). L’an passé, ces deux installations avaient justement reçu la labélisation International Center based on Research Reactors (ICERR), attribuée par l’AIEA.

En effet, la construction du réacteur Jules Horowitz a été rendue possible grâce à la coopération de plusieurs instituts de recherches : CIEMAT (Espagne), SCK (Belgique), NRI (République Tchèque), VTT (Finlande), IAEC (Israël), DAE (Inde), JAEA (Japon), NNL (Royaume-Uni). De même, plusieurs industriels tels qu’EDF, AREVA ou Vattenfall vont collaborer sur ce projet. Ce Réacteur d’Essai de Matériaux (ou MTR, accronyme anglais pour Material Testing Reactor) sera utilisé par l’industrie nucléaire pour « la sécurité et l’optimisation des réacteurs nucléaires existants comme au développement des futurs réacteurs ».
