Le parc nucléaire japonais tourne au ralenti depuis l’accident de Fukushima. Pour optimiser son exploitation, les trois industriels concernés (Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Toshiba et Hitachi) envisageraient un rapprochement au printemps 2017.

Selon le journal économique Nihon Keizai Shinbun, les trois énergéticiens chargés du parc nucléaire se préparent à regrouper leurs activités. Dans un premier temps, MHI, Toshiba et Hitachi devraient élever leur participation directe dans leurs filiales respectives, des sociétés détenues parfois conjointement avec des concurrents tels qu’Areva, Westinghouse et General Electric. Ensuite, elles envisageront peut être un rassemblement au sein d’une « entité conjointe dont chacun prendra un tiers, avant une éventuelle fusion complète ».

Actuellement, l’information n’est toutefois pas encore confirmée mais le rapprochement, s’il devait avoir lieu, interviendra au printemps 2017, précise le quotidien. En effet, dans deux communiqués quasi-similaires, MHI et Toshiba indiquent que « nous n’avons rien annoncé de tel et, même si nous étudions diverses options pour nos activités de combustible, rien n’est décidé à ce stade. Si quelque chose devait être rendu public nous le ferions dans les meilleurs délais ».

Enfin, cette stratégie est envisagée pour permettre au nucléaire d’atteindre « 22 % de la production d’électricité d’ici à 2030 », conformément aux objectifs affichés par le gouvernement. D’ailleurs, à la suite de cette rumeur, MHI et Hitachi ont vu leur cours de bourse progresser, à l’inverse de Toshiba qui a été fragilisé sur les marchés. Probablement en raison de l’investigation lancée par l’Autorité américaine de Sûreté Nucléaire (United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission ou NRC) dans une usine de sa filiale Westinghouse aux Etats-Unis.
