Au cours du Forum scientifique de l’Agence Internationale de l’Energie Atomique (AIEA), plusieurs chercheurs ont plaidé en chœur pour l’exploitation de l’atome. Selon eux, cette technologie présente de nombreux avantages, parmi lesquels celui de limiter le changement climatique, tout en garantissant l’approvisionnement en électricité pour tous.
Lors du forum annuel de l’AIEA, l’institution internationale a souhaité souligner l’intérêt du nucléaire pour atteindre les objectifs du développement durable, élaborés par l’Assemblée générale des Nations unies en 2015. Grâce au développement des technologies atomiques, les différents intervenants ont évoqué de possibles progrès dans le champ de la médecine, ainsi que des solutions pour renforcer la sécurité alimentaire et énergétique mais surtout pour préserver l’environnement.
Pour la directrice générale de l’Association Mondiale du Nucléaire, Agneta Rising, il existe « une forte demande pour l’électricité bas-carbone ». D’après ses estimations, la production d’énergie nucléaire devrait « doubler voire tripler pour répondre à cette demande », rappelant au passage que « tous les pays qui souhaitent décarboner leur mix électrique utilisent le nucléaire ».
D’autant que parallèlement, le directeur de l’Institut de Sûreté Nucléaire russe, Leonid Bolshov, assure qu’avec les retours d’expérience, la nouvelle génération de réacteur offre plus de garanties. Enfin, en présence du Prince Albert de Monaco, le ministre de la pêche et des forets des îles Fidji, Osea Naiqamu, a également tenu à apporter son soutien à l’énergie atomique qui contribue activement à la protection de son littoral.
