L’excentrique président directeur général de la société américaine Tesla, Elon Musk, a annoncé en août dernier qu’il planchait sur la commercialisation d’une toiture productrice d’électricité. Cette solution intégrée a finalement été dévoilée le 31 octobre 2016 lors d’une conférence de presse dans les studios Universal de Los Angeles. De l’avis des experts, ce projet vise surtout à mettre en avant les synergies qu’offriront la fusion entre le constructeur automobile Tesla et le fabricant de panneaux solaires SolarCity.

Une toiture solaire esthétique…

C’est au milieu de Wisteria Lane, rue fictive utilisée dans plusieurs séries TV américaines, qu’Elon Musk a tenu sa dernière conférence de presse, au cours de laquelle il a dévoilé son nouveau projet de toiture solaire. Le choix de cette avenue typique de la culture nord-américaine cadre parfaitement avec l’objectif que poursuit le fabricant de voitures électriques : changer la manière dont les citoyens américains perçoivent l’énergie solaire afin de favoriser son développement.

« Le réchauffement climatique est une crise sérieuse et nous devons faire quelque chose. Par le passé, les voitures électriques n’étaient pas très belles, elles ressemblaient à des voiturettes de golf. La même chose se passe avec les panneaux solaires, nous devons les rendre aussi attrayants que les voitures électriques le sont devenues », a expliqué Elon Musk devant un parterre de journalistes.

L’esthétisme des panneaux solaires constitue donc, selon Elon Musk, un obstacle majeur à leur adoption par les particuliers. L’homme d’affaire estime que sa toiture solaire, développée avec la société SolarCity, va permettre de résoudre ce problème : son nouveau produit d’appel a en effet été pensé pour être intégré à un bâtiment dès sa construction afin d’éviter le recouvrement ultérieur du toit par des panneaux solaires disgracieux.

… et complémentaire avec les installations énergétiques d’une habitation

Les toits des maisons pavillonnaires de Wisteria Lane ont donc permis à Elon Musk de démontrer que son nouveau produit d’appel s’intègre parfaitement à tout type et tout style d’habitations. Son système photovoltaïque, qui permet donc au particulier de générer leur propre électricité sans émettre de gaz à effet de serre, est composé de tuiles qui ressemblent à celles des maisons traditionnelles. Faite de quartz, la toiture solaire de Tesla afficherait une durée de vie illimitée, selon ses concepteurs.

Elon Musk a profité de cette conférence pour présenter une nouvelle version de sa batterie murale Powerwall. Cette dernière pourrait notamment être alimentée par la toiture solaire présentée un peu plus tôt. Grâce à une capacité de stockage deux fois plus importante que les anciens modèles, cette Powerwall 2.0 pourra désormais alimenter une habitation de 4 chambres ainsi qu’un chargeur pour voitures électriques de Tesla. Elle sera vendue à 5.500 dollars américains.

In fine, Elon Musk a tenté avec cette conférence de rassurer ses actionnaires méfiants quant au rapprochement de Tesla et du fabricant de panneaux solaires SolarCity. En insistant sur la complémentarité de ces différents produits (une toiture produisant de l’électricité stockée par une batterie la restituant à une voiture électrique), Musk espère que le vote du 17 novembre prochain entérinera le rachat de SolarCity pour 2,6 milliards de dollars.
