Après le Wall Street Journal en juillet, le quotidien économique Nikkei affirme également que deux électriciens japonais, Tokyo Electric Power et Chubu Electric Power, négocient la reprise des activités de commerce de charbon d’EDF. Privées de leurs réacteurs nucléaires, les entreprises du pays du soleil levant ont relancé la construction de centrales à charbon et cherchent à sécuriser leur approvisionnement.
En 2015, la filiale EDF Trading (EDFT) a créé une coentreprise à Singapour, Jera, « avec les deux plus importants fournisseurs d’électricité japonais, Chubu et Tepco, afin d’optimiser leur processus d’achat de charbon, ce qui a permis de doubler ses volumes d’exportation de charbon vers le Japon ». Aujourd’hui le groupe français souhaite vendre à ses partenaires ses activités dans le commerce de charbon, qui représente environ 100 millions de tonnes par an dans un marché mondial estimé à 1,3 milliard de tonnes.

Selon Boursorama, Tepco et Chubu Electric cherchent non seulement à se renforcer face à la concurrence accrue depuis la libéralisation de la vente de l’électricité, mais aussi à compenser l’arrêt de leurs réacteurs nucléaires depuis la catastrophe de Fukushima. Si un accord est trouvé, « les deux compagnies japonaises multiplieraient par 6 leur capacité propre d’approvisionnement » explique par ailleurs La Tribune.
De son côté, l’énergéticien tricolore, qui a entamé une révision de ses actifs stratégiques, souhaite se désengager des hydrocarbures pour continuer à réduire ses émissions de gaz à effet de serre (GES). Au cours de ces dernières années, l’entreprise publique a annoncé la fermeture de 10 centrales à charbon sur le territoire hexagonale et assure actuellement 98% de sa production sans émettre de CO2 grâce à un mix électrique composé essentiellement d’énergies renouvelables et de nucléaire.
