Pour le co-fondateur du Breakthrough Institute, Michael Shellenberger, la transition énergétique à l’échelle mondiale n’est pas à l’ordre du jour. En effet, il affirme que lors des dix dernières années, la part des énergies propres a diminué tandis que celle des énergies fossiles a progressé.
Dans un article du 11 octobre dernier, le journaliste à L’Usine Nouvelle Ludovic Dupin s’est intéressé à l’exposé TED de Michael Shellenberger. Au cours d’une vidéo diffusée mi-septembre et intitulée « comment la peur du nucléaire dégrade l’environnement », le co-fondateur du Breakthrough Institute analysait en effet le mix énergétique mondial.
Dans un premier temps, il a montré que la production d’énergie verte a progressé tout au long des 20 dernières années. Cependant, il a souligné également que « la part des énergies propres dans le mix de production d’électricité mondiale est passé de 36 à 31 % entre 1995 et 2013 ». Pour expliquer cette évolution, il a évoqué d’abord l’augmentation de la consommation en énergie des pays en développement. Ceux-ci répondraient prioritairement à leur besoin avec des combustibles peu chers comme le bois ou le charbon. Parallèlement, il a constaté aussi que la production nucléaire diminuait en valeur absolue.

Mais il a surtout indiqué que l’énergie solaire et les éoliennes ne permettaient pas de compenser le recul de l’atome. Celui qui fut considéré comme un héros de l’environnement en 2008 par le Time, a rappelé que ces énergies renouvelables étaient intermittentes. De ce fait, elles ne fonctionneraient que 10 à 20 % du temps, alors que malgré les progrès réalisés sur les batteries, leur stockage occasionnerait une déperdition d’énergie comprise entre 20 et 40 %. Pour toutes ces raisons, la lutte contre le réchauffement climatique serait loin d’être gagnée.
Pire, après avoir voyagé en Chine avec le MIT et Berkeley, et s’être entretenu avec des responsables indiens et japonais, Michael Shellenberger a même affirmé que la production d’énergies propres pourrait encore diminuer de 121 gigawatts pendant les 15 prochaines années. Aussi, résume-t-il, « nous ne vivons pas une révolution de l’énergie propre, mais une crise de l’énergie propre » !
