L’hydrogène a-t-il un rôle à jouer dans la transition énergétique ? Si la France semble sceptique à l’égard de ce sujet, compte tenu du peu d’efforts consentis en la matière ces dernières années, d’autres pays croient en ses capacités et encouragent son développement comme source d’énergie viable pour l’approvisionnement du parc automobile. Considéré comme une alternative propre et durable aux énergies fossiles, l’hydrogène reste toutefois encore assez peu compétitif au regard des coûts de production et de distribution qu’il implique.

Un réseau de distribution français quasi inexistant

Combiné à l’oxygène de l’air au sein d’une pile à combustible, l’hydrogène permet de générer de l’électricité en ne rejetant que de l’eau, et offre ainsi de grandes opportunités dans le développement d’un parc automobile plus durable. L’idée de concevoir des véhicules à hydrogène fait donc son chemin petit à petit et plusieurs constructeurs s’y attellent désormais. Après Hyundai et Toyota, seuls groupes automobiles proposant à ce jour un modèle alimenté à l’hydrogène en Europe, Mercedes et BMW pourraient eux aussi se lancer sur le marché. Un pari toutefois assez risqué en France compte tenu de la faiblesse du réseau de distribution sur le territoire hexagonal.

Si des pays comme l’Allemagne, la Belgique, le Danemark, ou le Royaume-Uni commencent à encourager le développement de leur réseau de distribution, la France traîne les pieds et semble peu convaincue par l’avenir de la filière. Plusieurs stations sont en cours d’installation en Isère tout d’abord dans le cadre du projet expérimental Hyway coordonné par Tenerrdis, ou dans l’Aveyron, fruit du partenariat entre la société Braley et Areva H2Gen. Mais ces initiatives restent trop isolées.

Concernant les véhicules sur le marché, les constructeurs français ne sont pas plus concernés. A ce jour, seule la société Symbio FCell propose un dispositif à base d’hydrogène associable aux véhicules électriques. Ce système prometteur appliqué sur des Renault Kangoo ZE permet notamment de doubler voire tripler leur autonomie, mais reste confronté à l’absence de stations de recharge et ne peut pas vraiment envisager de développement à l’échelle industrielle.

Des coûts encore trop élevés

La technologie de la pile à combustible comme les circuits de distribution de l’hydrogène (par camion et non par pipeline), imposeraient de plus des coûts significatifs et peu de possibilité d’amélioration dans l’avenir. France Stratégie, le Commissariat général à la stratégie et à la prospective, évalue le coût total de l’hydrogène fournit à la pompe à environ 10 euros le kilo, pour un prix moyen au kilomètre parcouru de 13 centimes, soit trois fois plus que le coût du gazole au kilomètre estimé à 3,5 centimes d’euros.

« L’hydrogène bénéficie actuellement d’un engouement médiatique sans rapport avec les perspectives réalistes d’avenir. Si tous les maillons d’une chaîne hydrogène ont fait la preuve de leur viabilité technique (…) le véhicule à hydrogène ne semble pas en mesure de concurrencer ses équivalents thermique ou électrique avant des années, voire des décennies », explique France Stratégie dans une étude réalisée sur les perspectives de développement de la filière.

Cette vision est toutefois largement contestée par les acteurs du secteur comme la société Air Liquide par exemple, pour qui ces coûts seraient surestimés. Le spécialiste français du gaz considère en effet que si de nombreux défis restent à relever avant d’envisager une exploitation à grande échelle de l’hydrogène dans le secteur automobile, les problèmes de sécurité du gaz sont d’ores et déjà maîtrisés dans la chaîne logistique. Ce progrès fondamental permettrait de concentrer la recherche sur une meilleure compétitivité de cette source d’énergie.

La condition d’une production d’hydrogène « verte »

Autre point de dissensions, pour une énergie qui entend participer à la transition énergétique et préserver l’atmosphère de toute émission de gaz à effet de serre, l’hydrogène implique un processus de production encore très polluant. « Pour un kilo d’hydrogène produit, on émet entre 5 et 10 kilos de CO2 », explique dans Actu-Environnement Bertrand Amelot, directeur commercial et marketing de McPhy Energy. En effet, le processus classique de production d’hydrogène baptisé reformage d’hydrocarbures (SMR – Steam Methane Reformer), consiste au reformatage par la vapeur du gaz naturel (essentiellement composé de méthane), et implique de ce fait de fortes émissions de CO2. Ce processus décrédibilise logiquement l’hydrogène comme solution durable, et doit être adapté lui aussi aux nouvelles exigences environnementales.

Il est toutefois possible dans ce cadre de produire de l’hydrogène « vert » en utilisant l’électricité produite à partir d’énergies renouvelables (solaire, éolien). Plusieurs projets de recherche comme sur la plateforme Myrte en Corse ou le projet Jupiter 1000 à Fos-sur-Mer (Bouches du Rhône) sont en cours et certaines entreprises parient aujourd’hui sur cette filière. On peut citer la coentreprise AREVA H2-Gen, qui a mis au point par exemple la technologie dite de l’électrolyse « PEM » (Proton Exchange Membrane) permettant la production d’hydrogène à partir d’eau et d’électricité issue du surplus de production des énergies renouvelables.
