Étudiée depuis de nombreuses décennies, l’exploitation de la géothermie en Alsace connaît ces dernières années un regain d’intérêt. Les nouveaux objectifs de transition énergétique et les progrès de la technologie font de cette source d’énergie renouvelable une réserve très prometteuse pour le bassin rhénan. A tel point que plusieurs élus locaux et opérateurs de la région se sont rendus récemment en Islande, afin d’observer les méthodes appliquées par le pays, référence en la matière.

L’Alsace et son fort potentiel géothermique

L’inauguration récente par Ségolène Royal, à Rittershoffen, de la première centrale géothermique d’Alsace, est loin d’être anecdotique pour la région et les collectivités du bassin rhénan, qui trouvent à l’heure de la transition énergétique, un intérêt écologique et économique certain au développement de cette technologie. Le fossé rhénan dispose, de par les petites failles tectoniques dont il est constitué, d’eau souterraine à haute température, et représente actuellement la première filière géothermique française reconnue sur le plan européen et international. L’Alsace recouvre en effet un potentiel exceptionnel avec des réservoirs d’eau à près de 100 degrés dès 1000 mètres de profondeur.

« On ne peut pas faire de géothermie partout, mais la plaine d’Alsace s’y prête bien, de par la géologie de son sous-sol. Ensuite, le contexte est très positif, nous rencontrons une attente des collectivités en termes de production de chaleur », explique Philippe Soulé, directeur du groupe Fonroche.

L’Alsace semble donc être un terrain privilégié pour le développement de la géothermie à l’échelle industrielle. Des expérimentations y sont d’ailleurs menées depuis plusieurs décennies, et trois nouveaux projets devraient être lancés prochainement pour accompagner la transition énergétique : dans les communes bas-rhinoises de Eckbolsheim (destiné au chauffage du réseau d’Hautepierre), de Vendenheim (pour du chauffage à visée industriel) et de Illkirch (afin de produire chaleur et électricité pour l’Eurométropole de Strasbourg).

Cela étant, de tels projets ne s’improvisent pas et si les industriels français présentent d’ores et déjà un savoir-faire reconnu en la matière (Fonroche, Groupe ÉS, etc.), l’Islande, pays considéré comme la référence dans ce domaine, est une source d’inspiration légitime pour les responsables alsaciens.

L’Islande, une source d’inspiration technologique et sociétale

De nombreux élus, universitaires et opérateurs locaux se sont rendus au pays des volcans afin de mieux apprécier les technologies utilisées par Reykjavik depuis le milieu du 20ème siècle. « Certes, la géothermie est à fleur de peau là-bas, mais ça nous a permis de voir la technologie utilisée ou de parler des questions de sismicité par exemple », explique dans le journal 20 minutes Alain Jund, en charge des questions énergétiques à la mairie de Strasbourg.

L’exploitation de la géothermie profonde, notamment, pose de nombreux défis technologiques et la région s’est toujours voulue à la pointe de la recherche et de l’innovation. C’est par exemple en Alsace, à Soultz-Sous-Forêts plus exactement, qu’eut lieu dans les années 1990 la première expérimentation en matière de géothermie, sous l’impulsion du groupe ÉS, filiale de l’énergéticien EDF. En Alsace toujours, à Rittershoffen, que la première centrale au monde de géothermie profonde à vocation industrielle a été inaugurée. De nouveaux programmes d’échanges universitaires devraient voir le jour entre Reykjaik et l’Insa de Strasbourg (école publique d’ingénieurs) afin de maintenir cette dynamique.

Mais la technique ne fait pas tout et les opérateurs et élus français souhaitaient également, lors de cette visite, s’inspirer du modèle islandais en matière d’acceptabilité citoyenne. « Trois permis d’exploitation ont été accordés, mais tout se fera à condition de prendre en compte les inquiétudes légitimes et expliquer la géothermie, pour éviter la confusion et les fantasmes », précise le président de l’Eurométropole Robert Hermann. Heureux hasard, Strasbourg recevait justement fin septembre un congrès européen de géothermie destiné à informer et sensibiliser le grand public sur les enjeux et atouts de cette énergie pour la région alsacienne.
