Le Sénégal ambitionne de porter la part des énergies renouvelables à 20% de son mix énergétique dès 2017. Pour s’affirmer comme le champion de la transition énergétique en Afrique de l’Ouest, le président Macky Sall mise particulièrement sur l’énergie solaire.

Comme le rappelle le directeur général de la Senelec, Makhtar Cissé, le Sénégal souhaite « diversifier les sources d’énergie à travers l’introduction de l’énergie propre » au sein de son mix énergétique. Cette stratégie a été confirmée par le Plan Sénégal Emergeant (PSE) et trouve désormais de nombreuses applications concrètes, entre autres grâce à l’énergie solaire.

Grâce à un investissement de 25 millions d’euros, la centrale solaire Senergy 2 a par exemple été mise en service fin octobre afin d’alimenter le réseau de la Société nationale d’électricité (Senelec). Il s’agit de la première installation de cette envergure dans le pays ; elle pourrait selon les experts fournir de l’électricité à 160.000 personnes.

Quelques jours plus tard, un parc photovoltaïque composé de 90 000 panneaux solaires a été inauguré par le chef de l’Etat à Malicounda, dans le département de Mbour. A cette occasion, le président Macky Sall a déclaré : « nous confirmons ainsi que le solaire, dans notre option du mix énergétique, jouera, assurément, un rôle de premier plan dans le renforcement de nos capacités de production d’énergie ».

Avec cette énergie verte et décentralisée, le pays compte améliorer l’électrification des zones rurales, où actuellement « 80 % de la population a ainsi recours au bois énergie pour la cuisson et au pétrole lampant ou aux lampes à piles pour l’éclairage», selon les chiffres du Ministère délégué chargé de l’énergie.
