Peu évoquée dans la loi de transition énergétique, la question du gaz comme énergie de complément pour les années à venir paraît pourtant essentielle. Ses qualités et ses nombreuses applications possibles dans le stockage de l’énergie en font en effet un atout de premier ordre pour servir de base de stabilité et permettre un développement harmonieux des énergies renouvelables intermittentes. Un programme de recherche piloté par le BRGM et baptisé FluidStory étudie actuellement la possibilité de stocker les excédents d’électricité sous forme de gaz dans des cavités salines souterraines.

La complémentarité des réseaux électriques et gaziers

Le Bureau de Recherches Géologiques et Minières (BRGM) mène, depuis le début de l’année 2016, un nouveau projet de recherches dédié aux solutions de stockage d’électricité grâce au méthane. Avec le soutien de l’Agence nationale de la recherche (ANR), le BRGM considère le gaz vert comme une alternative valable et souhaiterait jouer sur la complémentarité des réseaux électriques et gaziers (le gaz pouvant être reconverti en électricité, lorsque la demande électrique l’impose).

Comme l’explique sur le site Actu-Environnement Benjamin Dessus, membre de l’association scientifique Global Chance, « il est aujourd’hui possible de jouer sur la complémentarité entre les réseaux en convertissant de l’électricité en hydrogène ou en gaz » pour constituer à terme un système énergétique totalement renouvelable basé sur la synergie des réseaux. Pour cela, plusieurs méthodes de production de gaz vert sont étudiées comme la méthanisation (fermentation de matières organiques comme les déchets agricoles ou ménagers), la gazéification du bois ou d’autres combustibles végétaux, l’incorporation d’hydrogène produit à partir d’électricité renouvelable ou encore la méthanation.

La technique EMO (Electrolyse-méthanation-oxycombustion)

Les chercheurs du BRGM se sont concentrés dans le cadre du projet FluidStory sur le concept de méthanation qui repose sur un trio de réactions chimiques successives. L’électrolyse tout d’abord qui consiste à utiliser le surplus d’électricité pour produire du dihydrogène et du dioxygène par électrolyse de l’eau (H2O). Vient ensuite la méthanation durant laquelle le méthane se forme par réaction entre le dihydrogène et du dioxyde de carbone (CO2). Enfin, l’oxycombustion qui, en mettant le méthane au contact du dioxygène au sein d’une turbine à gaz, permet de recréer de l’électricité au moment choisi.

« L’avantage du concept EMO est de tourner en cycle fermé : le CO2 produit par l’oxycombustion est réutilisé pour la réaction de méthanation », souligne le professeur Behrooz Bazargan-Sabet, en charge du projet. La méthanation (procédé industriel permettant de transformer les excédents d’électricité en méthane) offre donc la possibilité de stocker de grandes quantités d’énergie dans le réseau gazier, dans l’attente d’une reconversion en électricité.

Des cavités salines comme espaces de stockage

Si des projets similaires (VGV pour volt gaz volt) existent déjà à l’étranger (en Allemagne notamment), l’objectif du BRGM est avant tout d’étudier la faisabilité du « stockage temporaire, massif et réversible d’une grande quantité de fluides (O2, CO2, CH4) », précise-t-il, et d’identifier pour cela l’environnement le plus adapté. Dans ce cadre, les cavités salines souterraines ont déjà été évoquées comme espaces de stockage potentiels.

« Le sel est un milieu à très faible perméabilité permettant une remarquable étanchéité des cavités », précise M. Behrooz Bazargan-Sabet qui tente de déterminer actuellement le « comportement thermodynamique et thermomécanique des cavités et l’équilibre géochimique entre les fluides et la saumure résiduelle ».

Le BRGM a d’ailleurs lancé un « inventaire méthodique des formations salifères ayant le potentiel d’accueillir les cavités », et repéré jusqu’à présent des formations géologiques de profondeurs diverses en « Lorraine, Alsace, Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur et Aquitaine ». Le projet FluidStory vise enfin à déterminer les conditions de rentabilité énergétique et économique du concept EMO à l’horizon 2030-2050.
