En raison de la crise économique, l’espagnol Iberdrola a décidé d’abandonner son ambitieux projet de centrale thermique à gaz en Mayenne. 

L’entreprise espagnole Iberdrola ambitionnait de construire une centrale thermique à cycle combiné, alimentée par du gaz naturel, à Villiers-Charlemagne (Sud-Mayenne). La crise financière européenne et espagnole a poussé le groupe à enterrer ce projet.

La centrale, d’un investissement estimé à 500 millions d’euros, devait être opérationnelle en 2013 et alimenter 400 000 habitants. 400 à 800 emplois auraient été créés pour sa construction et une centaine de personnes employés de façon permanente pour l’entretien.

« Ce projet s’inscrivait dans la logique de développement des énergies renouvelables au détriment du nucléaire. Il aurait fourni de l’électricité lorsque des installations photovoltaïques et des éoliennes n’auraient pas été en mesure de le faire. » explique Norbert Bouvet, maire de Villiers-Charlemagne.

L’entreprise espagnole estime « ne plus être en mesure d’assurer le coût de la construction de cette centrale […] en raison de la crise financière européenne et espagnole en particulier » et base également se décision sur « les incertitudes d’ordre réglementaire et les barrières à l’introduction de nouveaux intervenants sur le marché français ».
