Gaz non conventionnels contenus dans certains fonds marins et pergélisols, les hydrates de méthane constituent un potentiel énergétique immense. Reste à trouver des techniques d’extraction optimales pour éviter le rejet dans l’atmosphère de ces gaz à effet de serre.

 

 

 

[stextbox id= »info »]Caractéristiques des hydrates de méthane[/stextbox]Présents dans les fonds marins et les pergélisols, les hydrates de méthane sont des réserves de gaz naturel contenues dans des poches de glace. Ces réserves sont issues de la décomposition de matières organiques.

La pellicule de glace se forme uniquement à basse température et à forte pression, raison pour laquelle on retrouve uniquement les hydrates de méthanes dans certains fonds marins et pergélisols. Elle contient du méthane en grande quantité, ainsi que du sulfure d’hydrogène et du dioxyde de carbone. Si la température augmente ou si la pression diminue, les hydrates de méthane deviennent instables, la pellicule se liquéfie et les gaz se libèrent de leur enveloppe de glace.

Ces réserves d’hydrate de méthane sont des puits de carbone qui absorbent naturellement le CO2, à la manière des forêts sur le sol terrestre. Elles contiennent de très grandes quantités de gaz, très concentré en raison de la forte pression qui caractérise leur milieu. Ramené à la pression atmosphérique, un m3 d’hydrate de méthane représente 168M3 de gaz naturel.

Au même titre que les gaz de schiste, les hydrates de méthane font partie de la catégorie des gaz dit non conventionnels, par opposition au gaz conventionnel, la forme la plus exploitée du gaz naturel.

Le composé contenu dans les hydrates de méthane est inflammable au contact de l’oxygène, et il peut être donc utilisé pour produire de l’énergie et de l’électricité, au même titre que le gaz naturel.

Les réserves de gaz naturel contenues dans les hydrates de méthanes sont énormes et suscitent l’intérêt des compagnies pétrolières : elles sont estimées à 10.000 milliards de tonne d’hydrate de méthane, soit le double des réserves restantes cumulées de pétrole, de gaz naturel et de charbon.

Cela représenterait entre 140 à 700 ans  de production, si l’on se base sur le rythme actuel d’extraction du gaz naturel. Mais ce potentiel doit être relativisé car tous les sites contenant des hydrates de méthane ne sont pas suffisamment importants pour être exploité de manière rentable.

De plus il n’existe pas encore de technique d’extraction fiable, sachant que les gaz contenus dans les hydrates de méthane ne peuvent pas être extrait par forage classique. En effet, les hydrates sont très instables : un léger changement de température ou de pression entraîne la  fonte de la poche de glace et libère les gaz, généralement situés des couches sédimentaires poreuses. Or ces gaz sont à effet de serre et sont 20 fois plus impactant sur l’atmosphère que le CO2.

De nouveaux moyens d’extraction doivent donc être imaginés. Disposant d’importantes ressources sur son territoire et voulant réduire sa part de nucléaire dans le mix énergétique depuis Fukushima, le Japon est le pays le plus avancé sur la recherche de moyens d’extractions des hydrates de méthane.

La pays a lancé un programme de recherche sur la période 2001-2008 pour localiser et identifier ses ressources sous-marines. Ce programme a été suivi d’un nouveau programme de 7 ans, enclenché en 2009, sur l’exploitation de ces ressources. La première  expérience d’extraction d’hydrate de méthane en milieu marin sera menée au sud du Japon en mars 2013, avec des perspectives d’exploitation commerciale dès 2016.

2009 a également été marqué la création d’un centre de recherche japonais sur l’hydrate de méthane. Piloté par l’AIST (National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology) , sa mission est d’émettre au point une technique fiable d’extraction de l’hydrate de méthane.

De son côté l’OGMEC (Japan Oil, Gas and Metals National Corporation) a réussi une extraction sur sol terrestre en 2008, grâce à un système permettant de réduire la pression de l’hydrate de méthane. L’OGMEC travaille maintenant sur une technologie capable de faire une extraction en mer, en évitant que les gaz ne soient rejetés dans l’atmosphère.

Si ces expérimentations japonaises en diront plus sur le potentiel d’exploitation énergétique des hydrates de méthane, de nombreux observateurs restent sceptiques sur les possibilités de le faire sans risque pour l’écologie. Un risque qui pourrait être inévitable, même en cas de non exploitation à des fins énergétiques : le réchauffement de la planète d’un ou deux degré engendrerait probablement d’importants rejets dans l’atmosphère des gaz contenus dans les hydrates de méthane.

[stextbox id= »info »]Un cas particulier : le champ de Messoyakha en Sibérie [/stextbox]

Les hydrates de méthane sont exploités dans un seul endroit au monde, le champ de Messoyakha en Sibérie qui a d’abord été exploité entre 1970 et 1978 pour ses réserves de gaz conventionnel. La première phase d’exploitation a engendré une dépressurisation du site, qui a causé la libération du gaz contenu dans les hydrates.

Et contrairement à la plupart des réserves d’hydrates de méthane, situées sous des couches sédimentaires poreuses, les réserves de Messoyakha sont localisées sous un pergélisol imperméable, empêchant ainsi aux gaz d’être libérés dans l’atmosphère après la liquéfaction de la poche de glace qui l’entoure. Suite à ce constat, l’exploitation a repris en 1980, et elle est toujours à l’œuvre.
