25 ans après la dernière construction d’une centrale nucléaire, les Etats-Unis viennent de faire un grand pas vers le renouveau de cette industrie sur le territoire américain en octroyant à Westinghouse, filiale de Toshiba,  la certification pour développer son nouveau réacteur nucléaire AP1000.

La Commission de régulation du nucléaire (NRC) a indiqué avoir autorisé pour quinze ans la dernière version du réacteur AP1000, estimant qu’elle remplissait ses exigences en matière de sécurité.

Deux producteurs d’électricité du sud-est du pays, Southern Company et SCE&G (groupe Scana) sont déjà sur les rangs et veulent bâtir des centrales en Caroline du Sud et en Géorgie.

« Nos clients américains sont un peu plus près de la construction de réacteurs AP1000 et de l’embauche de milliers de personnes afin de fournir au final aux générations futures une électricité sûre, propre et fiable » ont déclaré les dirigeants de Westinghouse avant d’ajouter « la conception du réacteur AP1000 jette les bases pour la prochaine génération de centrales nucléaires aux Etats-Unis. Nous sommes ravi de le voir avancer sur le chemin imaginé il y a sept ans. »

Les Etats-Unis n’ont pas mis de centrale nucléaire en service depuis celle de River Bend en Louisiane (Sud) en 1986. L’opinion publique reste marquée par l’incident de la centrale de Three Mile Island en Pennsylvanie (Est) en 1979, où l’intérieur d’un réacteur avait fondu. La filiale de Toshiba estime que la construction de 2 réacteurs AP1000 aux États-Unis créera environ 35.000 emplois.
