Si les réserves terrestres d’uranium sont limitées, ce combustible précieux pour la production d’énergie à l’échelle internationale est également présent en abondance dans l’eau de mer. Une réserve jusqu’à présent inexploitée faute de technologies adéquates mais qui fait l’objet d’une étude prometteuse au sein du Laboratoire national d’Oak Ridge aux Etats-Unis. Pour la première fois, un procédé en ultra-haute résolution a été utilisé dans l’objectif d’étudier des fibres polymères capables de piéger l’uranium contenu dans l’eau de mer. Cette nouvelle approche pourrait permettre à terme aux chercheurs de repenser et d’optimiser les méthodes de récupération de ce combustible potentiel à destination des réacteurs nucléaires.

Des fibres polymères capables de piéger l’uranium des mers

L’eau de mer contient environ 3 mg d’uranium par m3, soit un stock évalué à plus de 4 Md t d’uranium sur la planète. Problème, l’extraction de l’uranium présent dans les mers pose de nombreuses difficultés techniques, du fait de sa faible concentration, qui rendent à ce jour son exploitation à la fois complexe et très coûteuse.

Plus concrètement, l’eau de mer est composée de divers ions métalliques tels que les ions sodium, magnésium ou fer, difficilement isolables les uns des autres. Or, pour extraire les ions uranyles, il est impératif de pouvoir les séparer du reste du mélange constitué par l’eau et toutes les autres espèces chimiques en présence. Un défi de taille auquel une équipe de recherche, dirigée par le professeur Carter Abney, du Laboratoire national d’Oak Ridge dans le Tennessee aux Etats-Unis, pourrait bien avoir trouvé un début de solution.

Publiée la semaine dernière dans la revue scientifique « Energy & Environmental Science » et réalisée en collaboration avec l’Université de Chicago, cette étude démontre tout l’intérêt de certaines fibres polymères dans l’extraction des ions uranyles de l’eau, et met au jour l’efficacité d’une nouvelle approche d’analyse ultra-haute définition.

Un nouveau procédé d’analyse prometteur

Cette méthodologie basée sur l’absorption de rayons X par spectroscopie de la structure fine, permet désormais d’avoir accès à de nouvelles données sur la composition des polymères en question. Le spectre des fibres polymères en contact avec l’eau de mer est ainsi apparu nettement différent de ce qui était attendu à partir de petites molécules et sur la base de modèles de calcul informatique.

« En dépit de la faible concentration de l’uranium et la présence de nombreux autres métaux extraits de l’eau de mer, nous avons pu étudier l’environnement atomique local autour de l’uranium et mieux comprendre comment il s’est lié aux fibres en polymère », explique Carter Abney.

« Cela remet en question l’hypothèse de longue date au sujet de la validité des approches simples à l’échelle moléculaire consistant à déterminer comment ces adsorbants complexes lient les métaux », a t-il ajouté. « Au lieu de l’interaction avec seulement une Oxime, on en détermine plusieurs qui devront coopérer pour lier chaque molécule d’uranium ». Pour rappel, l’Oxime est un composé organique azoté attaché à la fibre polymère responsable de la liaison de l’uranium.

Des perspectives d’exploitation considérables

Les chercheurs prévoient ainsi d’utiliser cette nouvelle connaissance pour concevoir des adsorbants pouvant exploiter les vastes réserves d’uranium dissous dans l’eau de mer.

« La production d’énergie nucléaire devrait augmenter avec la population mondiale croissante, mais des estimations indiquent seulement 100 ans de réserves d’uranium dans les minerais terrestres. Il y a environ 1.000 fois ce montant dissous dans l’océan, ce qui satisferait les demandes mondiales dans un futur proche », en conclut Carter Abney.

Selon l’Agence Internationale de l’Energie Atomique (AIEA), les ressources mondiales identifiées dont le coût d’extraction est inférieur à 130 USD/kg représentent à ce jour plus de 5,9 millions de tonnes (Mt), soit l’équivalent d’un siècle de consommation au rythme actuel.
